Tracking and Analyzing Executive Salaries, Bonuses, and Perks
# Monday, March 30, 2009
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein received compensation from stock and options valued at $42.9 million during fiscal 2008 according to the Associated Press.

Though the compensation was for performance prior to 2008 and Blankfein received no compensation tied to his performance last year, examples like this once again question whether drastic collapses should require CEOs to forgo performance pay promised in good years.

Goldman Sachs took $10 billion in TARP money while reporting its first ever quarterly loss last year - facts that led to a drop in its share price that erased all gains since 2005.

Do you see any relationship between board composition and excessive executive compensation? I have noticed that many of the boards have been loaded up with fellow CEOs, fellow members of the club. For example, GE has a total of seven external CEO's (i.e., in addition to GE CEO Immelt) serving on the board. (I include in this group one individual who is President of MIT). Isn't it in their best interest to keep executive compensation at a high level, regardless of performance?

At GE, the seven managers for whom executive compensation was detailed in the annual report received a total of more than $115 million, combined, in 2008, even though net earnings declined.

High compensation = lack of true competition
Like what car sales or electronic sales were before on-line sales and pricing info
= controlled markets
= club mentality
= no prison terms for all levels selling crap
= use car sales persons also get bonuses
The “sin” in business
